Tapping into Your Resilience During Stressful Times

By Ross Jackson

In this blog discover some hints and tips on how to tap into your resilience.

If you could sum up how you feel right now in one word, what would you say?

Hopefully you’re feeling empowered and energised. But, if you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or exhausted, you’re not alone.

It’s that time of year again. The dark nights are drawing in, Christmas is just round the corner, and the stressful holiday rush is upon us. Where’s the time gone?

No matter where you work, many of us are familiar with that dreaded feeling: targets start tightening, deadlines are looming, and the pressure’s ramping up. Whether you thrive on the rush, or you’re counting down until it’s over, one thing’s for sure: we could all do with practising a little more self-care.

The world is constantly changing pace, so our minds can easily become overworked and overstimulated. And with issues like the current cost-of-living crisis, many of us are more stressed now than ever, both in and out of work. So, it’ll probably come as no surprise that there have been over 1.8 million reported cases of work-related mental illness in the UK this year.

With World Mental Health Day only a few weeks ago, what better time to share some hints and tips to help you tap into your resilience.

What is Resilience?

resilience - spiralling mood

Resilience is a skill that’s hard to narrow down to a simple explanation. But, in essence, it’s about being able to tap into your inner strength when things get tough to overcome setbacks and challenges. It’s about being able to adapt to your surroundings and keep moving forward.

Resilience is not an inherent skill that some people naturally possess; we all have the capacity for resilience, but sometimes, we feel it less than others.

Interestingly, resilience levels can change several times a day depending on the circumstances. For example, at the start of the day, you might cope with a stressful situation fairly easily, but at the end of the day, when you’re tired, hungry, or irritable, the same situation could send you spiralling.

When we’re less resilient, we’re more likely to feel stressed, burned out, and overwhelmed.

What Can You Do?

To help you look after yourself and prime your mind for resilience, there are plenty of small actions you can take that could make a world of difference. Here are some quick questions to get you thinking:

resilience - setting boundaries

How good are you at setting boundaries?
Learning to say ‘no’ when you’re feeling stressed or overworked, or actively stepping away from your phone or computer when you need a break can give you some well-needed mental headspace, allowing you to recharge your batteries.

If you need any more hints and tips on taking your boundary setting to the next level, the Kultra app has a series of coaching modules that are designed specifically to help you create healthy boundaries, and confidently enforce them with others.

resilience - getting rest

How much care are you taking of your body?
We wouldn’t expect a car to run without fuel, so why would we expect the same from our bodies? If you’re feeling low on brainpower, consider nourishing your body with a nutritious meal, ensuring you’re drinking enough water, or prioritising a good night’s sleep.

resilience - chatting to friends

How connected are you with others?
When the cold winter nights come in, we often don’t want to leave our houses. This can be especially isolating for those of us who work from home. So, make time for people. Try reaching out to a friend or colleague for a chat, attend a class, or do something fun after work.

Resilience is an extremely valuable skill that enables us to navigate the challenges of the fast-paced and demanding world we live in. At this time of year, stress levels can reach new heights, so it’s more important than ever to take care of ourselves and nurture our resilience.
